    ThumbnailLast Saturday 11 Jun 2011, about 40 digital practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds – software developers, interaction desigers, 3D modelers, content managers and geeks in general – got together at the  ThinkSpace in the Powerhouse Museum for the first AR Dev Camp Sydney. Our MIDEA was well represented by a team made of Inez Ang, David [...]

    Thursday late afternoon suits me well too.

    Hi Martin, First of all, thank you, Rob, Nick and Deborah for all the support last night setting up the works and making sure the whole event run smoothly – greatly appreciated! I would certainly be interested in such a debriefing session, there are quite a few lessons to be learned from the experience we [...]

    That’s a really good point – we’ve been running our sketch (Liquid Light) on my MacBook Pro with 4GB and I’ve already had to increase the Processing maximum available memory to 2048MB to get it running more smoothly, especially when lots of blobs are identified (e.g. a reasonable amount of people interacting). Of course, also [...]

    There is an incredible potential fuming from this technological hotpot indeed, very exciting. I would go even further and also throw AR in the mix – imagine a fully immersive interactive emotional entertaining experience with music, physical interfaces and 3D projection mapping custom delivered without the need of actual projectors, but generated real-time by AR-enabled wearable devices? Yep, still a bit ambitious, but from all I can see highly achievable pretty soon.

    No need for media facades, expensive projectors, lenghty Council approvals, etc, etc, etc… Instead, wearable, personalised and tangible artistic experiences, delivered online and accessible everywhere.

    In fact, that is most likely an area I would love to focus my MIDEA reasearch on next year – if I find supervisors equally enthusiastic about it, that is. :D

    Martin, Deborah:

    How exactly are we expected to make use of these 10 min? Should we prepare a presentation (speech explaining the concept) and demo the interaction ourselves? Or should we just turn it all on and let the public figure out what it is all about (as they would with the real thing)?

    @debturnbull – Yes, from 5pm onwards. The Anti-Space Invaders Warriors have their own user testing from 5-6pm, and Liquid Light has just been confirmed by Martin from 6-6:30pm. We will not have the water mist on Tuesday yet (I’ll bring it in on Wednesday), but will hopefully be able to test the SmartSlab with the floor [...]

    Hi Martin, Team Liquid Light would like to hold a test on Tuesday night as well, perhaps after George, Mikey and David’s Awesome Bunch. More importantly, we would also like to test the sound speakers and the projector – if not on Tuesday night, then Wednesday during the day, before the collective dry run. Regarding [...]

  • Hi Phil, I understand many of your points and share great part of your concerns. We too have had to make concessions and redesign part of our solution just to accomodate the fact that our screen has suddenly shrunk from 15m to 3m width and the audience – rather than passing by along the long [...]

    Hi Martin, just a few points/questions: a. Thanks for arranging for not having the Kinect behind the glass – however, as you know, part of Team Liquid Light’s performance involves at times releasing the magic cosmic mist… so I guess we will need to place the mister at a reasonable distance from the screen and [...]

    Thank you so very much for sharing this, Deborah! It does look really poignant. It is really refreshing to notice sophisticated cultural happenings popping up these days in suburban Sydney, as it has also been the case of Angelica Mesiti’s “The Begin Again” (http://www.rococoproductions.com/500/500_047.html), which took place a few weeks ago in the streets of [...]

    Also, of course, please EVERYONE is more than welcome to come and play and give us as much feedback as possible!

    Besides, as a bonus, you also get the chance to feel blessed (and maybe a bit soaked) with our magic cosmic water mist)!! :-D

    Hi Martin, we from Team Liquid Light (Mela, Goldy and I) would like to book the 2:30 – 3:00 pm slot this Friday 27/05 for our user testing session, if possible. Would you, Rob our Nick be able to assist us connecting our Kinect and having the actual Processing sketch running on the SmartSlab (rather [...]

    ThumbnailWe all know extra wide multimedia walls are all the rage these days. This is, for example, a recently opened video wall created by Universal Everything for the foyer of Deutsche Bank’s new headquarters in Hong Kong: Although having a much higher definition, the parallels with the Grid Gallery are obvious, particularly due to the odd aspect ratio – [...]

    Just complementing Mela’s latest post on Team Liquid Light progress, here is the link to the original version (recorded on our laptops) of the videos we then played at the SmartSlab. They illustrate two variations of our interaction prototype as of last Friday (20/05) afternoon. – Version with “plain” auras (drawn as a blob outline [...]

    I know we have already passed the Ideation phase, and I swear I haven’t seen or heard anything about this before and, yes, I know and admit it may sound a bit far fetched, but… I just can’t help relating this to our course and a few of the concepts presented for the installation at the Grid [...]

    I guess the main common challenges would be how to:

    1. track people;
    2. enable multiuser interaction;
    3. learn about the Kinect’s constraints (like minimum and maximum distance thresholds, shadows in the depth image, etc) and how to work around them seamlessly.

    Although that might very well take up the few weeks we have ahead. :)

    That’s a great idea, Inez. I do have a feeling most of us will be using the Kinect on our implementations, so that would really come handy.

    In reply to - Inez Ang started the forum topic A Kinect workshop? in the group IDEA9102: I think it’d be handy to learn more about tracking with the Kinect and wonder if we could have a workshop on its finer points like pose tracking and gesture recognition? To do this during one of the lab sessions would be [...] · View
